[News Briefing Cambodia] Korea’s GLS Foundation Provides $15 Million in Humanitarian Aid to Three Cambodian Provinces

Signs 3rd MOU with the Cambodian Senate for 2026–2031… Allocating $5 Million Each to Kep, Prey Veng, and Battambang Provinces

The Global Life Sharing Foundation (GLS), a South Korean international relief NGO, is launching a humanitarian aid project worth a total of $15 million targeting three provinces in Cambodia.

According to the Senate of Cambodia, Uch Borith, Acting President of the Senate, met with Kim Jung-nam, Chairman of the GLS Foundation, and his delegation at the Senate Palace on the 22nd to discuss the foundation’s humanitarian achievements and plans for expanding future cooperation.

Acting President Uch Borith welcomed Chairman Kim Jung-nam and the delegation on their second visit to Cambodia, stating, “This visit serves as a meaningful milestone demonstrating the strengthening ties of friendship and cooperation between South Korea and Cambodia.”

He also emphasized, “During the restoration of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1996, Hun Sen, President of the Cambodian Senate, and the late former South Korean President Kim Young-sam played pivotal roles.”

Since 2022, the GLS Foundation has implemented various humanitarian aid projects across Cambodia, focusing primarily on healthcare, education, and social welfare.

Marking this visit, the GLS Foundation and the 10th Commission of the Cambodian Senate signed an extension for their 3rd Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The agreement spans five years from 2026 to 2031, with the total aid package reaching $15 million.

The targeted regions for this assistance are Kep, Prey Veng, and Battambang provinces, with each province scheduled to receive $5 million.

Acting President Uch Borith expressed his expectations, saying, “We anticipate that this support will contribute significantly to human resource development and the expansion of road, water, electricity, and technology infrastructure—key areas of the Cambodian government’s national development strategy, the ‘Pentagonal Strategy Phase I’.”

He then extended his gratitude to the GLS Foundation, Chairman Kim Jung-nam, and the delegation on behalf of Senate President Hun Sen and the Cambodian people.

On the same day, the Cambodian Senate conferred medals upon Chairman Kim Jung-nam and GLS Foundation officials in recognition of their contributions to improving the quality of life and promoting social welfare for the Cambodian people.

Kim Jung-nam, Chairman of the GLS Foundation, responded, “We are deeply grateful for the continuous support and cooperation from the leadership of the Cambodian Senate. We remain committed to further strengthening the friendly cooperation between our two nations and expanding humanitarian aid activities for the people of Cambodia.”

According to an announcement by the Cambodian Senate, the GLS Foundation has provided approximately $34 million in humanitarian aid over 22 separate occasions from 2022 to the present.

Furthermore, the total scale of the GLS Foundation’s aid projects in Cambodia from 2022 to 2031 is projected to reach $55 million across nine provinces. The project is being coordinated and managed locally by Min Byung-jang, Head of the GLS Cambodia Chapter (and Special Advisor to Acting Senate President Uch Borith), alongside the World OKTA (World Federation of Overseas Korean Traders Associations) Phnom Penh Chapter.

The foundation is also considering plans to expand its support to other provinces in Cambodia starting from 2027.

Acting President Uch Borith concluded, “The Cambodian Senate will continue to actively cooperate with the GLS Foundation to ensure that its humanitarian aid activities can steadily expand in the future.”
